NFL Gamecock Roundup: Clowney Shines, Joseph Struggles in Loss

Last night could summed up for the Houston Texans by their two resident Gamecocks, Jadeveon Clowney and Johnathan Joseph.

Clowney was in full-force last night, though the stat sheet shows just two tackles. But the former No. 1 overall pick frequently made appearances in the Colts' backfield, including giving a nice lick to quarterback Ryan Mallett, and creating a sweet highlight with a one-handed takedown of running back Frank Gore in the backfield. There are few players more satisfying to watch work at 100 percent than Clowney.

Unfortunately, Johnathan Joseph was not as fortunate in his work. Though he had three tackles and a pass deflection, it looked easy for the 40-year old Matt Hasselbeck, and Joseph was stretched thin due to the weak Texans secondary.

Joseph was also responsible for multiple penalties, and is a bit on the hot seat in Houston. To be honest, I think the Texans should focus on getting better players to play alongside Joseph in the backfield rather than try to pin problems on him.

On the whole, the Texans had quite a few good moments in the game, particularly on offense after the insertion of Brian Hoyer. There were still too many failings on defense, however, which remains surprising given the presence of Clowney, J.J. Watt, and Vince Wilfork up front. Bill O'Brien is definitely on the hot seat, because if the Texans can't start putting together wins, it's safe to say ownership won't have any problems finding someone who can.
