How To Survive Signing Day

By Rixon Lane

We have almost arrived at one of the biggest days in the college football season.

National Signing Day is Wednesday, when elite high school football recruits across the country will announce where they intend to play college football.

This day is always nerve-wracking for fans, so I've put together some tips to help Gamecocks get through the ups and downs of Signing Day.

1. Pick a few players to focus on

If you try to keep up with every single target, you're going to burn out before lunch. My advice is to choose 2-3 targets, set an alarm for when they are announcing, and be sure you are sitting down to watch/follow those announcements. My picks would be DB Rashad Fenton (10:00 AM) and DB Damon Arnette (3:00 PM). Use the rest of your day to do non-Signing Day related things. On that note...

2. Go outside

Signing Day cabin fever is a very real thing. Go experience the sunshine and fresh air to keep yourself from going clinically insane on Wednesday, especially if a recruit chooses the incorrect school. Yard work, playing catch with your kids, anything that will get you up and active is a good idea.

3. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best

You play with the team you have, not the team you'd hope to have. You probably will have a more pleasant experience if you mentally prepare for your team to not sign anyone. Obviously, that won't happen, so you're bound to be happy at the end of the day. Yes, I know it sounds crazy, but I promise that it works.

4. Keep perspective

This can be incredibly difficult, but keep in mind that South Carolina has landed Marcus Lattimore and Jadeveon Clowney while missing out on players like A.J. Green and Carlos Dunlap. Hits and misses are all part of the deal. This is easier to remember if you follow this final piece of advice...

5. Remember that none of it matters until August

No matter how many stars you slap on a recruit, none of us will have any idea how good any of these players are until they put on the pads at fall camp. Maybe there will be busts, maybe there will be diamonds in the rough. Until then, just enjoy the ride on Wednesday.
